Issues and Solutions with, iTunes Backup, iExplorer, .amr file conversion, VLC, Audacity

I have had some voicemails that I needed transferred onto my computer and I decided  I would rather not play them on speaker and try to record them on my computer.

I have a MacBook Pro, Mac OS X, Vs. 10.6.8.
iPhone 4S, 16 gig, Vs. 7.0.3 (Yes its an old version but this process will work with any iphone)

First you would need to backup your phone onto your iTunes.
Plug your iPhone into your computer via your (USB to 30 pin) or (USB to 8 pin) connector.
Open iTunes and
- Click* Back Up Now

I ran into the problem: iTunes could not backup the iphone "(Your iPhone Name)" because the backup was corrupt or not compatible with the iPhone. Delete the backup for this iPhone, then try again.

Instead of deleting the backups in iTunes I decided to go strait to the source and delete them from there. The directory is:
(Starting from the desktop)
- Click* Go
- Click* Computer
- Click* "Your username" (Left of window)
- Click* Library
- Click* Application Support
- Click* Mobile Sync
- Click* Backup

I had a lot of backups and there was no reason to have them all. I don't have my old iphones and I would rather have a new backup rather than the old ones, so I deleted all the backups.

I then opened iTunes and started the process over again
- Click* Back Up Now
It can take anywhere from 5-10 minutes to back up so patience is key

Once it was backed up I could then proceed to try and get my voicemails off my phone
I already had iExplorer and this is the program I trust the most when messing with my phone internally.
If you don't have iExplorer you can download a version here:
http://www.macroplant.com/iexplorer/?gclid=COGZkZzy3MECFdKIfgod62QAlQ

The top of the window looks like this:

Under  "Download" and "Buy"
I Clicked on "Mac"
It brings you to a new window and begins the download for you.
My download window automatically pops up and looks like this:

You then click on the downloaded iExplorer box and it brings up "Download iExplorer (Version Number)"
Drag the iExplorer icon to the right into your "Applications" folder and it begins to copy iExplorer to Applications.
I then get into Applications, find iExplorer and double click on that.
My mac brought up the box:

I know that I downloaded it from www.macroplant.com and that it is a safe site so I clicked "Open".
iExplorer is now open and this box appears:

For what we need to do, we can use the demo so click on "Continue with Demo" on the bottom right corner.
iExplorer then opens and within the window this appears:
Click on "Data"
Click on "Voicemail" on the top right.
My backups are protected so it asked me to type in the password.
Once it is typed in and correct, it will "read backups" and load your voicemails
It is really easy to use and see which voicemails are which.

I ran into a problem:
I clicked on the voicemail that I wanted and then clicked on "Export Selected" then this window appeared:

Because we are using Demo mode we can not upload the voicemail using the "Export Selected" button.
Now click on "Continue Demo"
Return to the Voicemail screen and select the Voicemail you would like to export, once selected, drag the voicemail onto your desktop and BOOM! you now have the voicemail on your desktop.

I then ran into this problem:
The voicemail is in a .AMR format, which all voicemails are.
So now we need to convert the .AMR file into an .MP3 file.

NOTE: Below: I tried this and it didn't work. I am not all that familiar with VLC so maybe I did something wrong but after the last step it just prompted an error and I was stuck so I went a different route. As I was going through the steps myself I wrote them down for your use and had no success but for reference and maybe a little insight on how VLC works i'm keeping it all on here.
Just go to the red letters that say -END- and continue this process there.

-START-START-START-START-START-START-START-START-

I use VLC media player: If you don't have it, get it here:

Click on "Free Download"
the download box appears and downloads in seconds.
Then double click on VLC Media Player.dmg, it will bring up this window:

Once you double click on the "Installer" icon
the warning box that says it is an application from the internet appears and I know that it is a safe download so click on "Open"
You then go through the "Download and Install" instructions
It asks if you want to download "Mac Keeper", I hate adware so I click on "Decline" for that one and any of the "Sponsored Downloads" following.

It then begins downloading and should look like this:

Once it is completed, click on finish and the window should dissapear. A new window appears with a few icons. The "cone icon" with VLC under it is what you want to use.
I then took the VLC icon and drug it to the "Applications" folder.
You can still click on the "Cone Icon" or go into your Applications and find it there, then click on it to open it.
Once opened, it asks you to drag the file into VLC, it also has the open to "open media" but I dont mess with that.
Find the Voicemail on your desktop and drag it to VLC. It is almost instantly placed into VLC and it begins playing for you. The buttons for controlling the audio are below, "Stop, Play, Fast forward, ect."

-Click* on the audio you want to convert so it is highlighted in blue
-Click* File
-Click* Convert/Stream

Then this window appears:

Drag the highlighted media from the VLC main window into the "Arrow pointing down icon".
The "Arrow pointing down icon" is then replaced with the name of your file.
Under "Choose Profile", select "Audio-MP3"
Under "Choose Destination"
-Click* "Save as File"
It then changes and looks like this:

-Click* Browse
-NOTE: if you don't have a folder yet, I suggest making one on your desktop. I made a new folder and called it "Voicemails".
After you click "Browse", it brings you to your finder.
- Click* Desktop
- Double Click* Voicemails
- Click In* Save as
- Type* whatever you want your new MP3 voicemail to be called or click on the old name and it will place that in the "Save As" box.
- Click* Save
it brings you back to the original conversion window
- Click* Save again

-END-END-END-END-END-END-END-END-END-END-END-END-

After trying and failing with VLC I decided to see if Audacity would take the file and it did.
I just did a "drag and drop" with the Voicemail File and put it in Audacity.
If you don't have Audacity, it is a FREE download and you can get it here:

on the site click on which ever works for your computer, for me it was the first link:
After I clicked on that it brought up a new window and said:

My download window appeared and showed this:

It didn't take 8 minutes, it was actually quite fast. After it is done downloading, double click on audacity-macosx-ub-2.0.6. and it will bring up this window:
Just like the others, drag "Audacity" into "Applications"
It then copies into Applications and once it is copied:
-Find* Applications
-Click* Applications
-Click* Audacity
It will open a new window with the headphone icon on it and "Audacity" under it
-Click* Audacity icon
It then opens a window that says, ""Audacity" is an application downloaded from the internet. Are you sure you want to open it?"
-Click* Open
The Audacity graphic appears and opens after a few seconds

Once the file is in Audacity:
-Click* File
-Click* Export

I saved it as "Voicemail 1" in a folder I made on my desktop called "Voicemails"
"MP3 Files" is already selected under "Format" so your set there,
Then:
-Click* Save
It then prompted me this window:
-Click* OK
It then prompted this window:

I didn't care to place any other information about the "Track" in here so i then just clicked "ok" again and it saved my voice mail as an MP3 in the "Voicemail" folder.

There you have it. :)
